Artist Statement

Kim Sun is a ceramic artist whose practice explores memory, mourning, and healing. Through repetitive handwork, she transforms invisible emotions into material form, placing at the center of her practice the point where personal memories expand into shared communal experiences. The origin of her work lies in childhood memories of spending time by the sea with her grandmother. Listening to the sound of the waves while watching her grandmother sew left a lasting impression on the artist. Over time, the gentle movement of the sea and the rhythm of a needle passing through fabric became essential visual languages in her ceramic practice. While the needle leaves no trace as it passes through the cloth, the thread remains like ripples on the water. These traces reappear as lines, perforations, and repetitive forms in clay, symbolizing the transformation of memory into material. More recently, Kim has expanded her practice into participatory works that explore mourning as a collective experience. Participants engage in a ritual of writing, binding, and burning their memories, confronting loss through a shared ceremonial process. In this context, fire does not signify disappearance but serves as a medium of transformation, while ceramics become vessels that preserve the traces of change. Kim's work questions the relationships between absence and presence, memory and time, and the individual and the community. Through the materiality of clay and repetitive gestures, she explores how memory and mourning can evolve into rituals of acceptance.

작 가 노 트

김선은 도자를 매개로 기억과 애도, 치유의 과정을 탐구하는 작가이다. 반복적인 손의 행위를 통해 보이지 않는 감정을 물질로 전환하며, 개인의 기억이 공동체적 경험으로 확장되는 지점을 작업의 중심에 두고 있다. 작업의 출발점에는 어린 시절 할머니와 함께한 바다의 기억이 자리한다. 파도 소리를 들으며 할머니가 바느질을 하던 시간은 작가에게 깊은 감각으로 남아 있다. 잔잔하게 움직이던 바다와 천 위를 오가던 바늘의 움직임은 시간이 흘러 도자 작업의 중요한 조형 언어가 되었다. 바늘은 천에 머물지 않고 빠져나가지만, 실은 물결처럼 흔적을 남긴다. 이러한 흔적은 점토 위의 선과 구멍, 반복되는 형태로 이어지며 기억이 물질로 남는 과정을 상징한다. 최근에는 개인의 기억을 공동체의 경험으로 확장하는 참여형 작업을 통해 애도의 의미를 탐구하고 있다. 참여자는 자신의 기억과 감정을 기록하고, 묶고, 태우는 일련의 의례를 수행하며 상실과 마주한다. 이 과정에서 불은 소멸을 의미하기보다 기억을 다른 형태로 전환시키는 매개가 되고, 도자는 그 변화의 흔적을 담아내는 그릇이 된다. 김선의 작업은 사라짐과 남겨짐, 기억과 시간, 개인과 공동체 사이의 관계를 질문하며, 반복되는 손의 행위와 도자의 물질성을 통해 기억과 애도가 수용의 의례로 확장되는 과정을 탐구한다.
